Nature/Characteristics of Human resource management (HRM)

   Human resource management is concerned with the management of human energies and competencies.

It has following characteristics:

  1. Human Focus
  2. Management Function
  3. Pervasive Function
  4. Continuous Commitment
  5. Dynamic
  6. System
  7. Mutually oriented

These above mentioned points are explained below in brief:

1. Human Focus: 

        HRM is people centered. It is concerned with human element at work. It focuses on people possessing energy and competencies. It regards people as the most important resource of an organization. It develops human potential. Employees are regarded as human assets. Every employee is the concern of HRM.

2. Management Function:  

         HRM is concerned with management function of staffing. it is an important function of management. HRM function is needed in all types of organization.
 

3. Pervasive Function:

         HRM is a pervasive function of management. It is concerned with all levels of of human resource at work. It is performed by all levels of managers. HRM responsibility cannot be delegated. 

4. Continuous Commitment:

          HRM is continuous function. It is not a one time activity. It is concerned not only in present but also in future. It ensures continuous commitment of employees.

5. Dynamic:

         HRM is a dynamic function. It is influenced by the changes in the environment. It adapts to the changing political, legal, economic, socio-culture and technological forces. It ensures environmental adaption.

6. System. 

        HRM is a system consisting of acquisition., development, utilization, and maintenance functions,. It takes a system approach to management of human resource. It utilizes human potential to increases productivity.

7. Mutually Oriented:

          Mutuality is common interest. It ensures commitment of employees. HRM promotes mutuality between employers and employees. It is in terms of mutual objectives, mutual influence, mutual respect, mutual rewards and mutual responsibilities. It promotes "HRM think" organization wide. It focuses on team work.
